The character named Peter is based off a real person named Peter Francisco. Benjamin Franklin was entirely real, but was not actually in New Orleans. He did however publish the Poor Richard's Almanac. The fact that George Washington was captured was true, but instead of being dead, he was rescued. In the book the British win, so obviously the book is not entirely real. The Spanish also actually took over all of the British forts, while in the book, the fleet was destroyed before they could even reach the fort.
